Giants' Sanchez makes Series debut at DH
DETROIT -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy decided to plug backup catcher Hector Sanchez in as the designated hitter in the eighth slot in his lineup for Saturday's Game 3 of the World Series at Comerica Park.

It was Sanchez's debut in the Fall Classic. He went 0-for-4, including three strikeouts, as the Giants beat the Tigers, 2-0, to take a 3-0 series lead.

"It's incredible to play in the World Series, the opportunity that I was hoping for," Sanchez said before the game. "I'm happy to be in the lineup to try to help win these last two games we need."

After playing a key role in allowing Bochy to get Buster Posey rest from his catching duties once or twice a week during the regular season, Sanchez has seen limited playing time in the postseason. In the first two rounds of the playoffs vs. Cincinnati and St. Louis, he played in three games, going 1-for-7 (.143) with a run.

But with the Tigers' starting rotation loaded with right-handed pitching -- including Game 3 starter Anibal Sanchez -- the switch-hitting Sanchez was eager to reward Bochy's faith in him.

"[Bochy] always gave me that vote of confidence during the season," Sanchez said.

Sanchez hit .280 in 74 games in the regular season with three home runs and 34 RBIs, while proving that he could handle his defensive responsibilities behind the plate.

The Venezuelan native said that he's happy with his rookie season, no matter what his playing time is in October. But now there's more work to be done.

"Even if I didn't get this opportunity, I was going to be thankful for the ones I did get and happy about the season I had," Sanchez said. "I was going to try to help the team whether I was in the game or yelling from the dugout."
