DETROIT -- In a small yet significant gesture, the A's will wear a "GJN" patch on their uniforms through the postseason to honor Gehrig John Neshek, the son of reliever Pat Neshek who passed away Wednesday, just 23 hours after being born.
Neshek rejoined the team on Friday, after wife Stephanee encouraged him to do so, and manager Bob Melvin said there was no debate whether the righty specialist would be on the American League Division Series roster.
"It was actually a very easy decision," Melvin said. "It's something he wanted to do. He wanted to get here sooner than later. He wanted to be here for his team. He wanted to help his team out in a very difficult time for him, and that made it pretty easy to add him to the roster and make him available today."
Neshek is one of just two pitchers in the A's bullpen with postseason experience, having made two appearances for the Twins in the 2006 ALDS against Oakland.
