Third baseman Mike Olt, sidelined with inflammation in his right heel, is running and taking batting practice, but the Rangers aren't sure when he'll be ready to play in a game. He hasn't played since Sept. 12 and there's still some doubt whether he will be ready by the beginning of the playoffs. Said manager Ron Washington, "We're not thinking about the playoffs. He just needs to get healthy."
Mike Napoli, who hits in the lower half of the Rangers order, hit a two-run home run in the first inning of Thursday's 9-7 victory over the Athletics. It was Napoli's first hit in the first inning since a grand slam against the Athletics on July 8, 2011. He was 0-for-15 in the first inning between the two home runs.
First baseman Mitch Moreland normally starts against right-handers but was out of the lineup on Friday against Angels ace Jered Weaver because Washington wanted to catch Geovany Soto with Ryan Dempster on the mound. Napoli started at designated hitter and Michael Young was at first base.
