ARLINGTON -- Thanks in large part to a gritty effort by Jered Weaver, who pitched seven innings of two-run ball to reach 20 wins for the first time in his career, the Angels beat the Rangers, 7-4, on Friday to keep their faint postseason hopes alive.

But they're not getting any help.

The A's beat the Mariners, 8-2, and the Orioles beat the Red Sox, 9-1, keeping the Angels two games back of the second American League Wild Card spot and three games back of the first one, with only five games left. They'll play two more against the Rangers, then finish their season with three in Seattle. The A's host the Mariners for two more games, then the Rangers for three.

"We need to win and get some help," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "So the only thing we can control is how we're playing the game, going about our business. We have to come out tomorrow, same energy, and win a ballgame. And if we can do that from now until the end of the season, hopefully we're going to get help. All we want to do is get one toe in that door, and I think we're going to have a good chance."

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
