DENVER -- Despite beating the Rockies, 8-7, on Saturday night the D-backs did not gain any ground on the Cardinals for the final Wild Card spot.

The D-backs did, however, gain ground on the three teams that stand between them and the Cardinals.

The Phillies, Dodgers and Brewers all lost, which meant the D-backs are a game closer to them and they now trail the Phillies by just a half-game.

The D-backs are still 4 1/2 games behind the Cardinals with just 11 games left on the schedule and no head-to-head matchups with any of the teams ahead of them.

Arizona has not shown any sign of giving up, having won five of its last six games.

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
