ANAHEIM -- The Angels gained a game in the race for an American League Wild Card on Saturday with their 4-2 victory over the White Sox while the Athletics were losing a 14-inning thriller to the Yankees in New York, letting a four-run lead in the 13th get away.

Oakland holds a 2 1/2-game lead over the Angels for the second Wild Card spot. The Orioles hold a two-game advantage over the A's.

"If it's a must win, we've got no choice," Torii Hunter said, the Angels needing to finish strong with 10 games left and the three-game series with the White Sox concluding on Sunday. "Leave it on the field every day.

"I'm always going to see light. That's how I am. I'm a guy who's been there, done that. Albert [Pujols] was there last year. We're 2 1/2 down. There's always a chance. The A's lose three, we win three ... there you go. We're even."

Added Dan Haren, the winning pitcher on Saturday night: "We're really positive. It's always nice to win and go home and enjoy it with your family. We're playing well."

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
