Rangers' Path to the Postseason: Sept. 23, 2012
SEATTLE -- A handful of Rangers huddled around the clubhouse television prior to their game against the Mariners on Saturday to see how the A's would fare in New York. The Yankees' improbable extra-inning comeback in the Bronx led to cheers from the players, as an opportunity to pad their lead in the American League West presented itself.

The Rangers were unable to put greater distance between themselves and the second-place A's, though, losing to the Mariners, 1-0. Texas' lead in the AL West still stands at four games after their second straight loss in Seattle.

Despite many of the players keeping a watchful eye on the A's, manager Ron Washington continues to maintain a focus only on his team.

"There ain't nothing I can do about it," said Washington. "We have our hands full with Seattle."

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
