PITTSBURGH -- How far have the Brewers come in their surprise bid for the postseason?

Consider the fact that a month ago, on Aug. 19, they were 12 games under .500 and 12 1/2 games behind the Pirates, who held the National League's second Wild Card.

One month later, after 21 wins in 27 games, they are three games over .500 and one game better than the Pirates after dealing Pittsburgh a 6-0 loss on Tuesday at PNC Park.

The Cardinals continue to lead in the chase for that second Wild Card berth, 1 1 /2 game better than the Dodgers, who were rained out on Tuesday, and 2 1/2 games better than the Brewers.

"The No. 1 goal was to get back to .500 and go from there," said Yovani Gallardo, who earned the win on Tuesday after allowing only two hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. "Everybody in here is not going to give up until the last game of the year."

Added Ryan Braun: "We just continue to believe. The second Wild Card gives everybody hope."

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
