Justin Upton was back in the No. 3 spot in the lineup Sunday after hitting a long home run to left field Saturday night. Once a staple in that slot, Upton had been hitting fifth more often than not since mid-July.
"I feel like he's swinging the bat good right now," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "I kind of want him in front of [Jason] Kubel. His on-base has been good. Get him on base and get that hole open. Kubel seems to be pulling some balls through that hole, and maybe influence him to get some more fastballs."
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the D-backs' rotation of Ian Kennedy (27 years old), Wade Miley (25), Trevor Cahill (24), Patrick Corbin (23) and Tyler Skaggs (21) is the youngest in the Majors.
Closer J.J. Putz has not allowed a run in his last 24 appearances, a span of 23 2/3 innings. The right-hander has converted 19 straight saves, third-longest active streak in the Majors behind Aroldis Chapman of the Reds and Huston Street of the Padres.
