A's reinstate Griffin and Inge from DL

The Oakland A's reinstated right-handed pitcher A.J. Griffin and third baseman Brandon Inge from the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Collin Cowgill and infielder Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today.

Griffin was selected from Sacramento June 24 and went 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in eight starts before he was placed on the DL August 5 with right shoulder tightness. He went 1-0 with a 4.90 ERA in two rehab starts with the River Cats on August 22 and 27. Griffin combined for a 7-3 record and a 2.82 ERA in 17 games, all starts, with Double-A Midland and Sacramento this year.

Inge was batting .216 with 12 home runs and 52 RBI in 82 games before he was placed on the DL August 14 retroactive to August 12 with a sprained right shoulder. He went 4 for 20 (.200) with two doubles, one RBI and four walks during a six-game rehab assignment with Sacramento that began on August 23. This was his third stint on the DL this year, which includes a strained left groin with Detroit and a strained right groin with the A's from May 13 to 27.

Cowgill joins the A's for the third time in 2012 and is batting .271 with a home run and nine RBI in 32 games with Oakland. He was on the A's Opening Day roster and went 0 for 4 in three games before he was optioned to Sacramento April 17. Cowgill returned May 11 and appeared in 29 more games before he was placed on the 15-day DL June 23 with a sprained left ankle. He was reinstated July 17 and was optioned to Sacramento that day. Cowgill combined for a .242 batting average with two home runs and 21 RBI in 42 games with the River Cats in July and August and hit .254 with four home runs and 37 RBI in 61 games overall with Sacramento.

Hicks returns to Oakland for the second time after batting .183 with three home runs and seven RBI during a 20-game stint with the A's from June 23 to August 1. He hit .169 with five home runs and 13 RBI in 25 games with Sacramento following his August 2 option and had a .244 average, 18 home runs and 61 RBI in 90 games overall with the River Cats.
