Rangers don't expect deal for Sheffield

LAS VEGAS -- The Rangers, who could use a right-handed bat, did speak with the Tigers about designated hitter Gary Sheffield at the Winter Meetings.

It was not a serious conversation. The Rangers would be interested only if the Tigers took on a significant portion of his $14 million salary, and that's not going to happen.

Said one Rangers official, "We would consider it if they wanted to give him away, but we're not going to spend money there."

The Tigers have no interest in giving him away.

"He can still hit," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "You've seen him take 95-mph fastballs and turn them around. When he settles in, and I think he will when he gets his 500th home run and that's off his mind, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on and has a quality year. He can still hit. He's a tough guy at the plate, and he's very well respected. He knows the strike zone. And I think he'll go out and put up some good numbers for us."

The Rangers have Hank Blalock as their designated hitter and are focused more on upgrading their starting pitching.
