Jays explore backstop job with Barrett

LAS VEGAS -- In their search for depth behind the plate, the Blue Jays sat down with the agent for free-agent catcher Michael Barrett on Wednesday during the Winter Meetings. Toronto is hoping to add Barrett as a backup for starter Rod Barajas.

"We talked to his representative today," Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi acknowledged. "We talked to him about possibly coming over here at some point. We're still working that one out.

"We're just going to try to get him in camp and see if it works out."

Barrett, 32, hit just .202 with two home runs and nine RBIs last season, appearing in only 30 games for San Diego due to a variety of injuries. Over his 11-year career, Barrett has hit at a .264 clip in stints with the Padres, Cubs and Expos.

Toronto would probably prefer to use a Minor League contract to acquire Barrett, who made $3.5 million in 2008. According to a report on ESPN.com, the Orioles, Astros and Marlins have also expressed interest in the veteran catcher.
