Infielder Jordy Mercer stayed in the game after taking a Jason Motte pitch below his right wrist while he squared around to bunt in the ninth -- but only because the game ended a few minutes later.
Both players will be re-evaluated when the club checks in at Busch Stadium for Sunday's rubber game of the three-game set.
Mercer underwent X-rays immediately after the final out, and they were negative, leaving him hoping he got away with merely a bad, and very painful, bruise.
"Right when it happened, the pain was pretty big," said Mercer, who had made his second consecutive start at second base in place of Neil Walker, who is recovering from a dislocated right little finger. "It hurt so bad, I didn't know what to think. But then the pain went down and I took the base. We'll see how it is [on Sunday]."
Chances are Mercer would have sat out Sunday's start anyway. With left-hander Jaime Garcia going for St. Louis, it will afford a good opportunity for Josh Harrison to make a start at second.
