• Center fielder Franklin Gutierrez took batting practice and worked out with the team prior to Friday's game as he continues to recover from headaches and lingering issues from a concussion on June 29.
"Hopefully, he'll get a full day of baseball activity today and we'll see where he's at from there," said manager Eric Wedge.
Once Gutierrez is ready to play, he will begin a 20-day maximum rehab stint in the Minor Leagues.
• Going into Friday's series opener with the Twins, Mariners starters were 14-6 with a 2.74 ERA and 19 quality starts in the last 26 games. Since the All-Star break, Seattle's starters rank second in the AL and fourth in the Majors with a 3.18 ERA.
• Mariners hitters were batting .208 at home and .249 on the road through the first 109 games of the season. Opposing hitters have batted .219 at Safeco and .265 in their home parks.
• Former Mariners pitcher Bob Wolcott will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Saturday's 6:10 p.m. game against the Twins as part of the team's ongoing 35th Anniversary Celebration.
