SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have reinstated catcher Yasmani Grandal from the 15-day disabled list and have placed catcher Nick Hundley on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion, retroactive to August 16. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Grandal, 23, was placed on the disabled list with a right oblique strain on July 31. He played in two rehabilitation games for Single-A Lake Elsinore. In 24 games for San Diego this year, his first Big League campaign, he has hit .312 (24-for-77) with five doubles, a triple, five home runs, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored. In 56 games for Triple-A Tucson this year, he hit .335 (65-for-194) with 18 doubles, six home runs, 35 RBI, 40 runs scored and 37 walks against 35 strikeouts.
Hundley, 28, was recalled from Triple-A Tucson on August 9. He was previously optioned to Tucson on June 30. The catcher has started 56 games for San Diego this season, tossing out 19 attempted base stealers. In 58 games total this year for San Diego, he has hit .157 (32-for-204) with seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, 22 RBI and 14 runs scored. Originally selected by the Padres in the second-round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona, he has hit .238 (289-for-1212) with 63 doubles, 11 triples, 33 home runs, 148 RBI, 125 runs scored and 101 walks in 363 games played over parts of five Major League seasons (2008-12), all for San Diego.
