Astros Recall Of Fernando Martinez From Triple A

The Astros have recalled outfielder Fernando Martinez from Triple A Oklahoma City, General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today.

Martinez, 23, will join the Astros in Houston today. After last night’s game, Houston optioned outfielder J.D. Martinez and infielder Matt Downs to Triple A. Infielder Tyler Greene, who was acquired from St. Louis yesterday, will be in uniform for tonight’s game as well. Martinez will wear #21 and Greene will wear #23.

Prior to his recall, Martinez hit .314 in 90 games at OKC with 23 doubles, 13 home runs and 62 RBI with a .507 slugging pct. In July, he hit .365 (19x52) during a 13-game hit streak with nine runs, three home runs and 11 RBI.

This will be Martinez’s second stint with the Astros big club this season. He appeared in four games during a brief stint in June. The Astros obtained Martinez by claiming him off waivers from the Mets on January 11, 2012.

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed right-handed pitcher Juan Abreu off waivers today. Abreu, who had spent the 2012 season at Oklahoma City, was designated for assignment by the Astros on Tuesday.
