Indians recall INF/OF Vinny Rottino; Place Travis Hafner on Paternity List

CLEVELAND, OH-The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has placed DH TRAVIS HAFNER on the Paternity List.  To replace Hafner on the 25-man roster the Indians have recalled INF/OF VINNY ROTTINO from the Triple-A Columbus Clippers.

Rottino, 32, was claimed on outright waivers from the New York Mets on June 27 and optioned to Columbus.  With the Clippers he has hit .299 (35-117) with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 4HR & 32 RBI in 30 games (.379OB/.496SLG/.874OPS) while appearing in 14 games in the outfield, 8 games at first base and 1 game at catcher and stole 7 bases in as many attempts. For the season at Triple-A (Columbus/Buffalo) he has hit .304 (78-257) with 19 2B, 2 3B, 8HR & 57 RBI in 66 games (.856OPS).  He previously spent two stints at the big league level with the Mets, May 4-11 and again from May 21-June 24, where he hit .182 (6-33) with a double, 2HR & 5RBI in 18 games before being designated for assignment on June 25.  He will wear #25 with the Indians.

The Racine, WI native attended the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse and was signed by Milwaukee in 2003 as a non-drafted free agent. His career Minor League batting average is .295 (1189-4034) with 223 2B, 30 3B, 81HR & 589 RBI in 1110 games since 2003 (417BB, 114SB, .363 on-base pct).  He owns a Major League career batting average of .188 (13-69) with 3 2B, 2HR & 9RBI in 44 games over parts of five seasons with Milwaukee (2006-08), Florida (2011) and the Mets (2012).  

Hafner is hitting .230 (45-196) with 6 2B, 2 3B, 10HR & 29 RBI in 59 games thus far in 2012 (.350OB%).  He must remain on the Paternity List from one to three days.
