MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced they have acquired two players and a draft pick in two separate trades. The team has acquired outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and the Pirates’ Competitive Balance Draft pick (second pick following first round) from Pittsburgh for first baseman Gaby Sanchez and right-handed pitcher Kyle Kaminska. Miami also acquired third baseman Zack Cox from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica. The announcements were made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest.
Hernandez, 24, has spent most of this season with triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .257 (61x237) with 43 runs and 25 RBI in 67 games. He made his ML debut this year with Pittsburgh, appearing in 25 games, primarily as a defensive replacement. Hernandez was originally signed by Detroit out of Venezuela in 2005, before being traded to the Braves following the 2007 season and then to the Pirates in June of 2009. He has been named to the World Team at the Futures Game three times (2007, 2008, 2010). Hernandez is expected to join the Marlins in Atlanta tomorrow.
Cox, 23, was the Cardinals’ first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2010 Draft out of the University of Arkansas. He has spent all of this season with triple-A Memphis, hitting .254 (76x299) with nine home runs and 30 RBI in 84 games. A left-handed hitter, Cox was named the Cardinals’ fourth-best prospect by Baseball America following the 2011 season. He made his professional debut in 2010 in the Gulf Coast League and was named a Rising Star in the 2010 Arizona Fall League, before splitting 2011 between single-A Palm Beach and double-A Springfield. Cox, born in Louisville, KY, is expected to be assigned to double-A Jacksonville.
Sanchez was the Marlins’ fourth-round pick in the 2005 Draft out of the University of Miami and appeared in 391 games overall with the Marlins. This season he appeared in 55 games with Miami and 34 games with New Orleans. Sanchez, who was born in Miami, was an NL All-Star in 2011.
Kaminska was the Marlins’ 25th-round pick in the 2007 Draft. He spent most of this season with double-A Jacksonville, going 6-3, 5.11 in 31 relief appearances.
