Frozen moment
The ball rocketed off the bat of J.D. Drew and drifted out to center. As it dropped over the wall, Francisco Rodriguez dropped his head and the Red Sox, at that moment, dropped the hammer on an Angels team that must now go into Fenway Park with an 0-2 deficit.

Big number
1 -- The number of extra-base hits allowed by Red Sox pitchers in the series thus far.

Game balls

J.D. Drew

His two-out RBI double in the first was a nice start. His two-run homer in the ninth was a grand finale.

Jason Bay

His three-run shot in the first gave the Red Sox a nice cushion from the get-go. That's two big homers in as many postseason games for Bay. After all those years cooped up on a losing Pirates team, this series is making him look like a man paroled.

David Ortiz

Big Papi extended his American League Division Series hitting streak to 13 games with a two-out single in the first, prompting a four-run outburst against Ervin Santana. He provided the spark again in the ninth with this leadoff double off Rodriguez, setting up the go-ahead run.

Jonathan Papelbon

The All-Star closer gave up a game-tying inherited run in the eighth, but extended his personal postseason scoreless streak to an incredible 17 2/3 innings over 11 appearances.

Sense of October
Even against one of the game's great closers, the Red Sox just have a knack for rising to the occasion when facing the Angels in October. The thunder sticks were pounding and optimism was in the air at Angel Stadium when the Angels tied it up in the eighth, but Drew's majestic homer silenced the crowd in a hurry.

Lines of the Game
Hitting
J.D. Drew
5 AB, 3 H, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 RBIs
Comment: It's safe to say Drew's timing is back after missing the better part of six weeks with a herniated disc in his lower back.

Matsuzaka
Pitching
Daisuke Matsuzaka
5 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks
Comment: Dice-K limited the damage, but the Red Sox could have used a much more efficient outing than they received from him. This was the 11th time in 30 starts this year that he lasted five innings or less.

Varitek
Spoken
"It's a big win. A huge win. And we had to grind through it to get there." -- Jason Varitek

Next step
October hero Josh Beckett will get the ball as the Red Sox hope to put the Angels out of their misery in Game 3 at Fenway Park on Sunday night. Boston has won 11 of its past 13 home playoff games.
