The Oakland A’s optioned catcher Derek Norris to Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today. The move clears a roster spot for George Kottaras, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday.
Norris was batting .195 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 21 games with the A’s. He went 5 for 47 (.106) over his final 13 games after hitting .333 over his first eight contests. Norris was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento June 21 and started 19 of the A’s 31 games at catcher. Opponents were successful in 8 of 10 stolen base attempts off him but pitchers had a 2.85 ERA with him behind the plate. Norris began the season at Sacramento and is hitting .273 with eight home runs and 36 RBI in 55 games with the River Cats.
Kottaras was hitting .209 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 58 games with Milwaukee before he was designated for assignment last Thursday. He had 29 walks, 24 strikeouts and an on-base percentage of .409. The 29-year-old left-handed hitter was traded to the A’s for right-handed pitcher Fautino De Los Santos yesterday. In parts of five Major League seasons, he has a .221 batting average with 18 home runs and 65 RBI in 222 games with Boston (2008-09) and Milwaukee (2010-12).
