Frozen moment
Vladimir Guerrero desperately trying to go from first base to third after Torii Hunter's bloop single fell just beyond first baseman Kevin Youkilis' reach in the eighth inning. But Youkilis reacted quickly and threw out Guerrero by a decent margin for possibly the biggest play of the night when the Angels were at bat.

Big number
0 -- Number of extra-base hits by the Angels. They had nine hits, but they were all singles.

Game balls

Darren Oliver

He retired all three batters he faced, including striking out David Ortiz with two on and two out in the seventh inning.

Garret Anderson

He had two singles and scored the only run. He also made a nice running knee-high catch on Mike Lowell's sinking line drive in the second inning.

Mark Teixeira

He had two hits, which was good. They were both singles, which typified the Angels' offense. He was robbed of a third single leading off the eighth by Jacoby Ellsbury's diving catch.

Sense of October
Anderson came up with two outs in the seventh and hit a cracked-bat blooper that was caught by second baseman Dustin Pedroia. He reacted with a frustrated grimace, holding the fractured bat high over his head. He wanted to slam it down, then flung it about 30 feet back in the direction of the Angels' dugout. He did the same with his helmet.

Next step
The Angels are off on Thursday, then they'll send right-hander Ervin Santana to the mound for Game 2 on Friday at Angel Stadium. The Angels need this one. They don't want to go to Boston down, 2-0.
