Right-hander Chuckie Fick, who was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Wednesday, has been claimed off waivers by the Astros. Fick was taken off the Cardinals' 40-man roster in order to open up space for the addition of lefty reliever Brian Fuentes.
A 15th-round pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Fick made his Major League debut with St. Louis earlier this season. He made just two appearances with the club before being sent back down to the Minors.
Major League Baseball overturned a ruling made by the official scorer in last Saturday's Cubs-Cardinals game. Matt Holliday has now been credited with an infield hit in the sixth inning of St. Louis' 12-0 win. The play had initially been ruled an error on Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro.
While Matheny did not label reliever Mitchell Boggs as unavailable out of the bullpen, it's no secret that the Cardinals prefered to stay away from calling on the right-hander on Friday. Boggs has appeared in three straight games.
