SAN FRANCISCO -- Padres infielder Alexi Amarista, who left Monday's 7-1 loss to the Giants with a jammed left thumb, was not in the starting lineup on Tuesday.
There's a chance that Amarista, a left-handed hitter, would not have played against Giants left-handed starter Madison Bumgarner anyway, but the real news was that Amarista's thumb felt better and that it didn't require an MRI.
Amarista hurt his thumb sliding headfirst while stealing second base in the fifth inning. He didn't hook the thumb on the bag, but instead injured it when his left hand initially hit the ground.
"He's doing fine. ... We think we dodged a bullet there," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He's doing much better."
Amarista, who can play all three outfield positions as well as second base, third base and shortstop, is hitting .360 with a .380 on-base percentage since June 19. He's hit safely in 19 of his past 21 games.
