PHILADELPHIA -- Right-hander Guillermo Mota, who's continuing to serve a 100-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance, has begun throwing in anticipation of rejoining the Giants, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday.
Bochy said that head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner has remained in touch with Mota, who was suspended May 7. Mota appealed the suspension, which he received for testing positive for Clenbuterol. Bochy said that the 38-year-old reliever was still awaiting results from the appeal. As a second-time offender, Mota could not delay his suspension during the appeal process.
Mota conceivably could rejoin the Giants by Aug. 31, which would make him eligible to participate in the postseason if they qualified for it. Before his suspension, he was 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in nine appearances.
