D-backs Reinstate Saito, Option Albaladejo To Reno

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have reinstated All-Star right-handed pitcher Takashi Saito from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo to Triple-A Reno, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Saito, 42, has been on the disabled list since April 4 (retroactive to April 1) with a strained right medial calf. He threw 3.0 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts in 3 appearances for the Arizona League D-backs from July 13-19, most recently on July 19 at the AZL Indians. He also appeared in 4 games at Reno from June 5-14, going 0-1 with a 10.12 ERA (3 ER in 2.2 IP), and 1 game at Single-A Advanced Visalia on April 19, tossing a scoreless inning.

Saito will become the first-ever player of Japanese descent to pitch for the D-backs when he appears in a game. The 2007 National League All-Star has spent parts of 6 seasons with the Dodgers (2006-08), Red Sox (2009), Braves (2010) and Brewers (2011). In 322 career relief appearances, he is 21-15 with 84 saves, a 2.18 ERA (79 ER in 326.0 IP) and .199 opponents average with 103 walks and 389 strikeouts.
