FLUSHING, N.Y., July 21, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced the team placed lefthanded pitcher Johan Santana on the 15-Day Disabled List with a right ankle sprain and recalled righthanded pitcher Jeremy Hefner from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. Hefner will wear uniform #53 and will be available for today’s game.
Santana, 33, is 6-7 with a 3.98 ERA (49 earned runs/110.2 innings) in 19 starts this season. The lefthander threw the first no-hitter in Mets history on June 1 vs. St. Louis, but since that start is 3-5 with a 6.54 ERA (31 earned runs/42.2 innings).
Hefner, 26, joins the Mets for the third time this season. In his two previous stints with the club, the 6-4, 216-pound native of Perkins, OK, went 1-3 with a 5.64 ERA (19 earned runs/30.1 innings) in 11 games, three starts. Hefner went 5-2 with a 2.77 ERA (19 earned runs/61.2 innings) in 10 games, nine starts, with Buffalo.
