Pitcher Brad Bergesen was designated for assignment to make room for Wednesday's starter, Tommy Hunter. Bergesen has his contract purchased on Tuesday and did not pitch.
Bergesen was placed on outright waivers and -- assuming he clears -- will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles chose to take him off the 40-man roster, rather than simply option him, which is why he was designated for assignment. The team's 40-man roster is now at 39.
The Orioles were awarded the fourth pick in the Competitive Balance Draft Lottery, which took place on Wednesday. They will get a sandwich-round pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, following the conclusion of the first round.
Adam Jones' two-run homer in the first inning on Wednesday was his 22nd homer of the year, 14 of which have tied or given the Orioles the lead.
