White Sox recall Pedro Hernandez from Class AAA Charlotte

BOSTON – Prior to tonight’s game at Boston, Chicago White Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez from Class AAA Charlotte.  Hernandez takes the roster spot of right-hander Jhan Mariñez, who was optioned to Charlotte following last night’s game.

Hernandez, 23, combined to go 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA (26 ER/80.2 IP) and 50 strikeouts in 14 appearances (13 starts) between Class AA Birmingham and Class AAA Charlotte this season.

The 5-foot-10 and 200 pound Hernandez was 7-2 with a 2.75 ERA (21 ER/68.2 IP) in 12 starts with Birmingham and was named to the Southern League All-Star Team.  A native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, he was promoted to Charlotte on July 6, where he went 0-0 with a 3.75 ERA (5 ER/12.0 IP) in two starts.

Hernandez was acquired from San Diego with pitcher Simon Castro on December 31, 2011 in exchange for outfielder Carlos Quentin.  He has gone 32-13 with a 3.42 ERA (161 ER/423.1 IP) and 356 strikeouts in 107 appearances (61 starts) over six minor-league seasons in the Padres and White Sox organizations.

Hernandez, who will wear uniform No. 58, is the 12th rookie to appear on the Sox 25-man roster in 2012 (10th pitcher) and the seventh with no previous major-league experience.
