CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced Lake County OF JORDAN SMITH has been named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week, July 9-14. This is the 2nd time this season Smith has been named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week (May 28-June 3).
Smith, 22, hit .571 (8-14) with a HR and 8 RBI throughout the week, which was shortened due to the All-Star Game, while posting a 1.349 OPS (.563 on-base pct, .786 slugging pct.). On July 12 vs. Wisconsin, Smith went 2-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBI and followed that up with a 3-hit game the next night with 3 more RBI. For the week he recorded all 8 RBI in a 3 game span from 7/12-7/14. For the 2012 season, he is batting .316 (92-291) with 41 runs scored, 16 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs and 42 RBI while posting an .825 OPS (.368 on-base pct., .457 slugging pct.). He currently ranks 2nd in the Midwest League in batting average (.316).
The Willmar, MN native was the Indians 9th round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Saint Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN. In 2011, Smith was tied for 2nd in the NY-Penn League in RBI (47), 3rd in OBP (.403), tied for 5th in doubles (20), tied for 6th in AVG. (.300) and 10th in hits (72).
