Play begins today in Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities U.S. Regionals

Games of the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) Regionals, the qualifying rounds to determine berths for the 2012 RBI World Series, begin today at several locations around the United States, including Anaheim, CA, Arlington, TX and Vero Beach, FL. At each location, RBI leagues from different cities in a particular region compete in the softball (ages 19U), junior baseball (ages 13-15) and senior baseball (ages 16-18) divisions. The Caribbean Regional Tournament, which began in late June and was hosted by MLB’s Latin American office at various MLB Club academies in the Dominican Republic, was won by RBI Dominican Republic (softball and junior baseball divisions) and RBI Venezuela (senior baseball division). All three have advanced to this year’s RBI World Series. Remaining regional tournaments are set to begin on Thursday, July 19th.

The 2012 RBI World Series, the international (U.S., Caribbean and South American programs) baseball and softball championship tournament of the RBI program, will again be hosted by the Minnesota Twins from July 31st to August 12th at various locations throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. The baseball championship games will be played at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins, on Sunday, August 5th. The softball championship game will be played at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium at the University of Minnesota on Sunday August, 12th. This will be the 20th RBI World Series, and several dignitaries are expected to attend tournament activities, including Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Rod Carew.
