Texas Rangers baseball foundation to host Southwest RBI tournament

The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Arlington will host this year’s Southwest Regional Tournament for the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program beginning TOMORROW, July 12 until Sunday, July 15.

Over three days seven teams from Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi will play against Texas Rangers RBI players from Dallas and Arlington for the opportunity to advance to the 2012 RBI World Series in Minneapolis later this month.  The 135 players in attendance for the Southwest Regional Tournament will be competing at either the Jr. RBI or Sr. RBI levels at various fields throughout Arlington.

Earlier this season Rangers players Adrian Beltre and Yu Darvish joined Ron Washington and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation to make a $60,000 donation to help fund RBI and purchase gloves, bats, balls and uniforms for players. In 2012 over 2,300 kids from underprivileged areas have been given opportunity to play baseball, participate in various camps and clinics and attend Rangers games as part of RBI.

Teams will arrive in Arlington the afternoon of Thursday, July 12 to tour Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and have dinner at the Ballpark as part of the opening ceremony. In addition to games, on Saturday, July 14, players will participate in a skills competition that includes a home run derby, accuracy throwing and speed races around the bases.

Tournament play for both junior and senior leagues will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday and conclude with a pair of championship games on Sunday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The championship game on Sunday is free and open to the public. Fans can park in Lot B and enter the Ballpark through the Homeplate Gate when gates open at 8:00 a.m.
