Andrew McCutchen And Joel Hanrahan Named To All-Star Team

Major League Baseball announced today that Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen and Joel Hanrahan have been named to the National League All-Star team for this year’s All-Star Game in Kansas City. It’s the second straight season the Pirates will have multiple representatives at the Midsummer Classic. Both players were named to the team by way of the player ballot. McCutchen comes into today ranked fifth in the league in hitting (.346), fourth in slugging percentage (.593), fourth in onbase percentage (.401) and sixth in RBI (51). He leads the Majors in batting average against left-handed pitchers (.451) and is second among all National League players in batting average with runners in scoring position (.388). He is also the only player in Major League Baseball this season with at least 15 home runs, 50 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

This is the second straight year the 25-year-old McCutchen has been named to the National League All-Star team, becoming the first Pirates outfielder to accomplish that since Jason Bay in 2005 and 2006. Since May 8, McCutchen has hit all 15 of his home runs, which is tied for the most in the National League and third-most in the Majors.

Hanrahan enters today ranked third among all National League pitchers in saves (20) and is one of just three Pirates to record at least 20 prior to the break twice (also Mike Williams and Jose Mesa). Since the beginning of last season, Hanrahan is also one of just three pitchers in the Majors to record 60 saves (Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel has 69 and Detroit’s Jose Valverde has 63). Since the beginning of last year his 90.9 save percentage (60-for-66) is also tops in the National League among pitchers with at least 50 save opportunities.

The 30-year-old Hanrahan is the first Pirates closer to make back-to-back All-Star teams since Mike Williams did so in 2002 and 2003.

Prior to this year the Pirates had four players named to the All-Star team since player balloting began in 2003 (Jack Wilson in 2004, Nate McLouth in 2008, Kevin Correia in 2011 and Joel Hanrahan in 2011).
