Huff nabs Player of the Week award

Huff nabs Player of the Week

|
Aubrey Huff made the last few days of August his own personal hitting tour.

The Orioles' designated hitter batted .478 (11-for-23) with four doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs from Aug. 25-31. Huff also posted a .913 slugging percentage along with a .480 on-base percentage.

Those numbers earned Huff the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week award. Huff also garnered Player of the Week honors on July 6, and this is the third such award in his career.

In the Orioles' victory Wednesday over the White Sox, Huff went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a stolen base. The performance was one of Huff's five multihit games during the week.

The next three days against his former team, the Rays, Huff went 6-for-12 with a home run, three doubles and four RBIs.

For the season, the 31-year-old slugger is batting .311 with 87 runs, 44 doubles, 30 home runs, 98 RBIs and a .576 slugging percentage.

"I think he's been one of the better offensive players in the league," manager Dave Trembley said. "He's been a legitimate middle of the lineup guy, hit for average, extra base hits, power, good runner. He had a big, big, big season and he's not done yet.

"I would expect that he would tack on numbers before the year is out, and leave at the end of the year with maybe the best year of his career, to be honest with you. I think he's got a chance to do that."

Other nominees for this week's award included Boston's Dustin Pedroia, Seattle's Adrian Beltre and Kansas City's Billy Butler.

Texas' Kevin Millwood (2-0, 1.72 ERA, nine strikeouts and one complete game) and the White Sox Gavin Floyd (2-0, 1.84 ERA and nine strikeouts) were two of five pitchers honored.

Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, will award Huff with a luxury Swiss Timepiece, suitably engraved, in recognition of his accomplishment.
