MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers were unsure as of Tuesday afternoon about the availability of closer John Axford, whose wife, Nicole, gave birth to the couple's second child during the day.
Axford tweeted a photo of his newbown son: Jameson Aedan Axford.
"When a guy has a baby, even if things go well, I don't expect him to be at the ballpark," manager Ron Roenicke said.
That raised the possibility of a thin bullpen corps. When he spoke to reporters about two and a half hours before Tuesday's first pitch, Roenicke also said he was unsure about Jose Veras, who was unavailable Monday after tweaking his groin in Sunday's loss at Minnesota.
On days Axford cannot pitch, Francisco Rodriguez is the Brewers' closer.
