KANSAS CITY, MO (June 11, 2012) — The Carolina League today has named Kansas City Royals minor league right-handed pitchers Sugar Ray Marimon and Yordano Ventura to its 2012 All-Star team. The High-A Carolina League squad will host the California League All-Star team on June 19 at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The 23-year-old Marimon is 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 13 games (eight starts) for the Blue Rocks in 2012. A 6-foot-1, 198-pound right-hander, Marimon has pitched 61.1 innings, allowing just 42 hits and 14 earned runs, walking 16 and striking out 54. Opponents are batting just .192 off the Cartagena, Colombia, native who was signed by Kansas City as a non-drafted free agent on November 20, 2006. Marimon was also a Midwest League All-Star in 2011 while pitching with Kane County.
Ventura, 21, is 3-5 with a 3.21 ERA in 12 starts with Wilmington. The right-hander has posted 70 strikeouts and 21 walks in 56.0 innings. Born and raised in Samana, Dominican Republic, the 5-foot-11, 167-pounder was signed by the Royals as a non-drafted free agent on October 8, 2008.
