Mock to make spot start for Nationals

MILWAUKEE -- The Nationals announced on Friday that right-hander Garrett Mock will make a spot start against the Brewers at Miller Park in the series finale on Monday afternoon.

Mock is getting this start because manager Manny Acta doesn't want left-hander Odalis Perez to pitch on short rest. Perez, who pitched on six days' rest against the Rockies on Thursday, was supposed to pitch the previous day, but the game was postponed because of rain. Perez would have pitched on three days' rest had he pitched on Monday.

The last time Mock started a game was on July 21 for Triple-A Columbus. In that game, Mock pitched seven solid innings and gave up one unearned run against Pawtucket. Since then, he has been a long reliever for the Nationals and Columbus. Both Washington and Mock feel the righty is stretched out enough to make the start.

"If that's the decision they make, then I'll be ready to do it," Mock said of Monday's start. "If [Acta] tells me to pitch out of the bullpen, I will. If he tells me to start, it doesn't matter. What ever the boss says, that's going to happen."

Mock is 0-2 with a 5.27 ERA for Washington this season.
