Phillies place contreras on disabled list

Right-hander José Contreras has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.  To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Michael Schwimer has been recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Contreras, 40, is 1-0 with a 5.27 ERA in 17 games this season.  He has not allowed a run over his last seven appearances, allowing just one hit while striking out six over 5.2 innings pitched.  Contreras began the year on the disabled list following offseason surgery on his right elbow and missed the Phillies’ first nine games of the season.  In 292 career games, he is 78-67 with nine saves and a 4.55 ERA.

Schwimer has gone 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in five games for the Phillies this season.  The 26-year-old has also appeared in 15 games with triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 2-1 record with six saves and a 3.93 ERA in 18.1 innings.  In 17 career games with Philadelphia, he is 1-2 with a 6.10 ERA.
