Pirates Homestand Highlights Monday, May 21 thru Wednesday, May 30, 2012

The Pittsburgh Pirates return to PNC Park for a nine-game homestand to round out the month of May. The Bucs will play host to the New York Mets, welcome the Chicago Cubs for a weekend series and start a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Memorial Day. The fourth homestand of the season will be highlighted by Social Media Night on Friday, May 25, Fireworks Night on Saturday, May 26, and kid’s Andrew McCutchen Camouflage Replica Jersey on Sunday, May 27.

  • Pirates Tales Kick-Off: Pirates Tales is a summer reading program through the Carnegie Libraries that rewards kids for reading throughout the summer. This kick-off event will be held at the Homewood Children’s Library (7101 Hamilton Ave.) at 11 a.m. as a Pirates Player will read “Casey at the Bat” to the preselected students.
  • Beep Baseball: Two Pirates players will be visiting the Western PA School for the Blind (201 North Bellefield Avenue) to participate in a game of Beep Baseball. Beep Baseball is played like standard baseball, but without a second base. Two bases are positioned in the locations of typical 1st and 3rd bases. When a player hits the ball, one of the two bases is activated randomly. The batter must reach the beeping base before a fielder gains control of the ball. If the batter reaches the base first, the batter scores a run and his turn is finished. If the fielder gains control of the ball first, the batter is out. The Pirates players will be designated to a team and will play the game blindfolded.
  • VIP Night: The Pirates and Pirates Charities will host a VIP Party for the Children’s Institute – The Day School’s graduating class. VIP (Very Important Pirate) Parties are monthly parties held during the season at PNC Park that will provide deserving children with a night at the ballpark in true VIP-style - complete with a private meet and greet with Pirates players & coaches, a Pirates replica jersey and VIP goodie bag for each child. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a pregame ceremony, a seat to watch the game in our exclusive Luxury Suites, great menu items provided by Levy Restaurants, entertainment and much more.
  • MLB2K12 Video Game Truck: Fans can play the latest MLB game from the gaming truck on Federal Street free of charge from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Lady Bucs Club Party: Tonight is the first Lady Bucs Club Party of 2012. Members will enjoy a pre-game party in the Pirates Picnic Park complete with giveaways and prizes as well as watch the game from the Lady Bucs Club section at PNC Park.   • Education Day: Pittsburgh Pirates Education Days combine baseball with various school subjects such as science, math and history, to create a fun educational experience at PNC Park. Each student will be given workbooks, which are underwritten by Pirates Charities and PPG Industries Foundation, as their teachers guide them through PNC Park on a treasure hunt to search for answers to a variety of questions about math, history and geography. The sport of baseball and the Pittsburgh Pirates are the theme for each question. Additionally, there will be a Weather Day presentation with KDKA’s Jeff Verszyla at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Pirates Dugout.   • BMX Bike Show: Following the Education Day there will be a BMX Bike Show held on Federal Street.

  • Miracle League Field: Pirates Charities and Casey’s Clubhouse will officially open Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills. This marks the fifth Miracle League field Pirates Charities has had the honor to be involved in and fourth in the Pittsburgh area. The Miracle League of the South Hills is now accepting applications for special needs players (youth and adult leagues) and volunteers (buddies, umpires, announcers, coaches and more).   • Saturday Raffles: Once again the Pirates Charities Saturday Raffles will be held in-stadium throughout the 2012 season. The raffle location is outside of the main Guest Relations office behind section 117. Fans can purchase raffle tickets to win prizes including Pirates memorabilia, original artwork, gift certificates and more. Raffle tickets are one for $2 or three for $5 with all proceeds benefitting Pirates Charities. The prize drawing takes place at the end of the 7th inning.

Anything that Floats

On Wednesday, July 4, the “Anything that Floats” race is back as part of the 35th Annual Pittsburgh Regatta and this year all proceeds from the race will go directly to support Pirates Charities. The race will start at 10 a.m. on Maz Quay on the North Shore River Walk and entries are encouraged to be as creative as possible as teams can push, pull, paddle, shimmy or sway their way to the finish line. Sports Luncheon

On Friday, June 8 the Pirates will host African American Heritage Day Sports Luncheon with keynote speaker Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the PNC Park Lexus Club. Dynamic Pricing Section

New for 2012, the Pirates unveiled dynamic pricing system for the Bleacher General Admission section at PNC Park. Tickets for the 1,400 seat section, located in left field, will be placed on sale 10-days prior to each home game. The initial ticket price will then be adjusted- both lower and higher- in real time, based on demand. As of May 21, this homestand features $9 tickets for the 1:35 p.m. game on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 vs. the Reds. Pitch for Hope

On Sunday, June 24 the Pirates will host the Pitch for Hope Women’s Baseball Clinic beginning at 8 a.m. on the field at PNC Park. The event is being sponsored by the Women’s Initiative at Eckert Seamans, Pittsburgh Brewing and Rue 21. Women ages 14 and older are invited to take part in the clinic, where they will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of pitching, hitting and fielding from Pirates players and coaches. The cost to participate in the event is $55 and it includes a ticket to the Pirates’ game against the Detroit Tigers at 1:35 p.m. that afternoon. Community Champion Awards

As part of our 2012 Heritage Weekend Celebration, the Pirates are accepting nominations for the "Pittsburgh Pirates Community Champion Award," to be presented to six (6) area individuals who are "champions" of their communities and have positively contributed to the betterment of the diverse community in our region. An independent panel of judges will select the recipients of the 2012 Community Champion Awards from the nominations received by the deadline of Friday, May 25, 2012. The 2012 winners will be recognized on-field in a special pre-game ceremony on Friday, June 8, during the Pirates Heritage Weekend Celebration. Cruise for a Cure

The Pirate Parrot will hold his third annual bike ride across Pennsylvania, leaving Pittsburgh on Monday, June 25, stopping that night in Altoona for the Curve’s 7 p.m. game at People’s Natural Gas Field, and arriving in Philadelphia on Wednesday, June 27 in time to take part in pre-game ceremonies before the Pirates game at Citizen’s Bank Park. New this year, the ride will be round trip as the Parrot will retrace the more than 350 mile trek back across the Commonwealth and arrive in State College on Thursday, June 28 and back to PNC Park on Friday, June 29. The Charity bike ride is in partnership with Pirates Charities and Mosites Motorsports with all proceeds benefiting the Western Pennsylvania Prostate Cancer Foundation.
