Manuel, umpire Davidson both suspended
PHILADELPHIA -- Manager Charlie Manuel yelled while Bob Davidson screamed and both got suspended one game.

Manuel seemed OK with the discipline while talking with the media Friday.

Major League Baseball suspended Manuel for his involvement in Tuesday's "on-field incident" with the veteran umpire in the eighth inning of a 4-3 victory over the Astros at Citizens Bank Park. Manuel served his suspension Friday night during the series opener against the Red Sox.

Davidson was suspended for "repeated violations of the Office of the Commissioner's standards for situation handling," MLB said in announcing the penalty.

Everything started on a strikeout and a wild pitch. Catcher Brian Schneider turned to retrieve the ball, but he brushed into Davidson. The Phillies believed Davidson interfered with the play and let him know it from the dugout. Davidson then yelled into the dugout, asking them if they thought he intentionally tried to block Schneider.

A few more words were exchanged before Davidson ejected Manuel, who stormed out the dugout and got into Davidson's face.

"It's over," Manuel said. "It's done."

Was he surprised Davidson got suspended?

"Surprised? Not really, because I think both of us were doing the same thing, I guess," said Manuel.

Manuel talked with MLB executive vice president of baseball operations Joe Torre about the suspension.

"I've got to be accountable for something if I did something that wasn't right," Manuel said.

Manuel was not allowed to be in the Phillies' clubhouse during the game. He planned to watch the game elsewhere, possibly in general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.'s suite.
