Soriano set for rehab with Mesa

HOUSTON -- Alfonso Soriano will begin a Minor League rehab assignment on Monday, and if all goes well, the Cubs could have their leadoff hitter back in the lineup on Wednesday or Thursday.

Soriano, who has been on the disabled list since June 12 because of a fractured hand, will be in the lineup for the Rookie League Mesa Cubs on Monday at Peoria, Ariz. Chicago opens a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night in Phoenix.

"I feel good," Soriano said. "The next thing is to get some at-bats and go from there."

Soriano took batting practice at Minute Maid Park on Friday and Saturday, and the Cubs waited until Sunday to see how his injury responded to those sessions. Soriano was given the green light Sunday morning.

"We'll see how it goes," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "So far, so good. Hopefully, he'll take this next step without any problem and we can get him back in the lineup."

Soriano has appeared in 51 of Chicago's 97 games. He is batting .283 with 15 homers and 40 RBIs.

The Cubs have lost three in a row entering Sunday's finale against the Astros and have scored just four runs during that span.
