CHICAGO -- Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco joked Thursday he might need to strap on catcher Carlos Ruiz's shin guards before he steps into the batter's box.
He has fouled several balls off his left knee in recent days, including one Wednesday that forced him out of the game in the seventh inning. He said he felt a little better Thursday, but his knee remained sore.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel did not start Polanco on Thursday. He had Ty Wigginton at third base instead.
Polanco thought he could pinch-hit Thursday, but was not sure about running or playing in the field.
