Former Orioles pitcher Hickey dies at 56
KANSAS CITY -- The Orioles' organization expressed sadness on Wednesday after learning that former left-handed reliever Kevin Hickey had died at 56.
Hickey, who pitched for the Orioles from 1989-91, had an overall record of 9-14 with 3.91 ERA and 17 saves in 231 games spanning six seasons.
Hickey's route to the Major Leagues was unusual, in that he did not play high school baseball. Following a successful stint as a softball player, Hickey was invited to a summer tryout with the White Sox and did enough to be extended a contract. Hickey made his Major League debut four seasons later in 1981.
