Brewers wives set to volunteer for Milwaukee Habitat Build-A-Thon

Milwaukee, WI – Milwaukee Brewers wives have consistently proved to be VIPs in the community. This week is no exception. While the Brewers are out swinging bats in New York and Houston, the ladies will be swinging hammers right here in Milwaukee as volunteers for the Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity 2012 Build-A-Thon.

Ellen Melvin, Karen Roenicke, Emily Greinke, Michelle Counsell, Susan Cutajar, Jill Hanel and Stacy Larrea will build on Tuesday, May 15 and Kristina Hart, Julianne Gamel, Sophia Cottini and Erin Dillard on Wednesday, May 16. They’ll join AmeriCorps members, local volunteers and sponsors all working together to build brand new affordable homes in Milwaukee’s Amani neighborhood.

Brewers Community Foundation is the presenting sponsor of the five-day event and has teamed up with Ryan Braun to lend support through a $50,000 donation. The contribution will fund the construction of Marquitta Smith’s new home. Smith grew up in the area and is excited to contribute hundreds of sweat equity hours, building her home and her neighbor’s homes and building a stable environment in which to raise her three children. Hers is one of the 10 Habitat homes being built over the course of the week.

“It is so gratifying to be able to spend the day building right alongside Marquitta. All of the new homeowners are working so hard for this opportunity,” said Ellen Melvin in anticipation of the build. “It’s truly an honor for all of us (the wives) to be a part of the event and the result – a rejuvenated Milwaukee neighborhood.”

The wives will be available for one-on-one interviews throughout the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. The build week, May 14-18, will draw to a close on Friday with a Brewers-style tailgate at Hephatha Lutheran Church, 1720 W. Locust Street, in the Amani neighborhood and an on-field check presentation with Ryan Braun at the Brewers game that night.

Through Brewers Community Foundation, the Brewers continue with their pledge to serve as leaders in the community. Brewers Community Foundation harnesses the pride, passion and commitment of Brewers fans, players and other supporters to positively impact the lives of children and their families in Greater Milwaukee and Wisconsin.
