CLEVELAND, OH -- The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has purchased the contract of RHP JEREMY ACCARDO from the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. To allow room on the Major League and 40-man rosters for Accardo the Indians designated RHP DAN WHEELER for assignment following yesterday’s loss at Boston.
Accardo, 30, has spent the entire 2012 season to date at Columbus where he has posted an ERA of 2.76 in 13 relief appearances (16.1IP, 12H, 5ER, 7BB, 16K, 0HR), has limited International League hitters to a .207 (12-58) average against and has recorded 4 saves in as many opportunities. Left-handed hitters have hit at a .118 (2-17) off him while right-handed batters have hit .244 (10-41). The Gilbert, Arizona native was a non-roster invitee to Major League camp this spring after signing a free agent contract with the Indians on January 19, 2012. This spring with Cleveland he posted an ERA of 1.00 (9.0IP, 11H, 1R/ER, 1BB, 6K) in 8 relief outings. The 6-1, right-hander split the 2011 season between Baltimore and Triple-A Norfolk as 2012 will mark his 8th consecutive season appearing on a Major League roster.
Wheeler posted an ERA of 8.76 (12.1IP, 17H, 12ER, 7BB, 2K) in 12 relief appearances with Cleveland after opening the season with the Major League club.
Accardo will be in uniform tonight when the Indians open a 2-game series against the Minnesota Twins in Target Field. He wears #57.
