Journal: LaPorta awaits Futures

Player Journal: Matt LaPorta

Matt LaPorta, the former Florida Gators star, burst onto the scene in his pro debut in 2007 after being drafted seventh overall by the Milwaukee Brewers. He hit 12 homers in only 115 at-bats (30 games) to lead the Minors in HR/AB ratio, then went on to lead the Arizona Fall League with six more roundtrippers in 30 contests. He also finished second in the AFL in RBIs and total bases.

Editor's note: Matt wrote this entry before learning that he'd been traded to Cleveland in a deal to bring C.C. Sabathia to Milwaukee. You can be sure his next journal will include news of that big change, as well as his report on participating in the Futures Game.

Hello again, this is Matt LaPorta, and I hope everyone is doing well.

We just got back into town from a 10-game road trip against the (Carolina) Mudcats and (Tennessee) Smokies. This week, we are playing four games against the (Birmingham) Barons, and then we'll be off to face the (Chattanooga) Lookouts for five games before the All-Star break.

Recently, they made the selections for the Futures All-Star Game, and I was invited to play on Team USA, which will go up against the World Team on Sunday, July 13, at Yankee Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. It is such a great honor to have been invited to play on this team, because there is so much great talent out there in Minor League Baseball. I am extremely excited to go to New York and get a chance to play in Yankee Stadium -- that in itself is a dream come true.

I also made the Southern League All-Star Team, which I was very pleased with because, again, there are a lot of good players in this league. My team, the Huntsville Stars, had eight players selected to the All-Star Team. This game is going to be held at the Carolina Mudcats' home, Five County Stadium, in Zebulon, N.C. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend that game, because I will be in New York for the Futures Game.

That's all I've got for this journal. I hope everyone enjoyed reading, and I look forward to writing again and answering your emails after the All-Star break.

Take care and God bless.

Verse of the Journal: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8
