Pirates announce Homestand Highlights for May 4-13

The Pittsburgh Pirates return to PNC Park after a seven-game road trip to host the Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, respectively during the team’s third homestand. Off the field, this homestand is highlighted by Fireworks on Saturday, May 5, Bowling with the Bucs on Sunday, May 6 and Pedal for Pirates Charities on Saturday, May 12.

 

Friday, May 4, 2012— Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds (7:05 p.m.)

  • Free Shirt Friday: Tonight is a Free Shirt Friday! All fans with paid admission will receive a free Pirates T-shirt, compliments of Allegheny Sports Medicine.
  • Pirates Celebrity Bartenders: Tonight’s celebrity bartender, former Pirates hurler John Smiley, will serve cocktails in the Hall of Fame Club beginning in the 7th inning and staying thru 30 minutes after the game.
  • Check Card Game:  As part of the many fan-friendly values at PNC Park, tonight is a PNC Bank Check Card game. Fans can save up to $10 on tickets for select games throughout the season simply by using a PNC Bank Check Card. For complete details, visit pirates.com/pnccheckcard.
  • Make-A-Wish Scholarship Event: Pirates Charities will welcome 22 former “wish kids” for the Kurt Weiss Scholarship Awards Night at PNC Park.  The opportunity to earn a scholarship is offered to any wish kid who is a senior in high school and intends to pursue post-secondary education.  It is named in honor of Kurt Weiss, a wish kid who now practices medicine in the Pittsburgh area.  Kurt will be present to recognize the students’ accomplishments, along with Judi Stone, President and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia, and Pirates President Frank Coonelly.  The students will be recognized on the field prior to tonight’s game.

 

Saturday, May 5, 2012—Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds (7:05 p.m.)

  • Cutch in the Community: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen will be signing FREE autographs for fans at the PNC Bank Hampton branch (4960 William-Flynn Hwy. (Rt. 8), Allison Park, PA 15101) from 12 to 1 p.m.
  • Zambelli Fireworks Night: Fans are encouraged to stay in their seats immediately following the game and enjoy an amazing fireworks display presented by Zambelli Fireworks International, courtesy of First Energy.
  • Scratch and Win: All fans, with paid admission, will receive a scratch and win ticket, compliments of Eat’n Park.
  • Saturday Raffles: Once again the Pirates Charities Saturday Raffles will be held in-stadium throughout the 2012 season. The raffle location is outside of the main Guest Relations office behind section 117. Fans can purchase raffle tickets to win prizes including Pirates memorabilia, original artwork, gift certificates and more. Raffle tickets are one for $2 or three for $5 with all proceeds benefitting Pirates Charities.  The prize drawing takes place at the end of the 7th inning.

 

Sunday, May 6, 2012—Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds (1:35 p.m.) Kids Day

  • Kids Day: Come down early and join the fun as the #1 Cochran Family Fun Zone will be open on Federal Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Lined up outside PNC Park will be inflatable rides, face painting, information about the #1 Cochran Bucaroos Kids Club and more.

Monday, May 7, 2012—Off Day

  • Latino Celebration: Tonight in the Keystone Corner Club at PNC Park from 6 to 9 p.m. the Pirates will host a Latino Celebration along with the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The night will include Latino food, drink, music and dancing as well as a chance to mingle with Pirates players, coaches, alumni and executives.

  • Positive Athlete Winners: The 26 winners of the inaugural Western Pennsylvania Positive High School Athlete Awards will be guests of the Pirates during tonight’s game. The Positive Athlete Award was created as a movement to promote more positivity in youth sports and winners were honored in a special ceremony, attended by Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens, at the Heinz History Center on April 21.

 

Thursday, May 10, 2012—Pirates vs. Washington Nationals (7:05 p.m.)

  • Pirates in the Community: Pirates players Pedro Alvarez and Jose Tabata along with coach Luis Silverio will visit with the students of La Escuelita Arcoiris, a local Spanish-immersion school in Squirrel Hill, from 11 a.m. – noon.
  • First Pitch by 86: Recently retired Steelers’ wide receiver Hines Ward will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before tonight’s game.

 

Friday, May 11, 2012— Pirates vs. Houston Astros (7:05 p.m.)

  • Hop for a Cure: The Pirate Parrot and Pirates pitcher Chris Resop will visit McKnight Elementary as a reward for their fundraising efforts in the HOP for Leukemia & Lymphoma. HOP for Leukemia rewards Pre-school and early elementary students for raising donations to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for each time they hop in two minutes.

Saturday, May 12, 2012—Pirates vs. Houston Astros (7:05 p.m.)

  • Pedal Event: Pedal for Pirates Charities presented by Highmark will take place today from 1 to 5 p.m. Cycling enthusiasts are invited to join Pirates Charities for a 100-bike outdoor stationary cycling program on Federal Street to raise money for Pirates Charities and the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh’s “Building Bridges” campaign. Local instructors from the Pittsburgh YMCA and the Oxford Athletic Club will lead this non-competitive event and all participants will receive a game ticket, a commemorative towel and have a chance to win great prizes.   • Baseball Skills Workshop: Pirates players and coaches will conduct a baseball skills workshop at the Josh Gibson Little League Field in the Hill District from 11 a.m. to noon. Players from the Josh Gibson Little League will rotate thru various stations around the field to learn fundamentals and receive pointers from the professionals.

  • Honorary Bat Girl: Each team in Major League Baseball is recognizing a fan who has been affected by breast cancer and demonstrate a commitment to “going to bat” in the fight against the disease with the 2012 Honorary Bat Girl program. The Guest Judging Panel will help select one Honorary Bat Girl for each of the 30 MLB teams to be recognized on-field on Mother’s Day and includes strong support from players throughout the League who are personally committed to the fight against cancer. 
  • Pink is in: Today, in honor of breast cancer awareness and in conjunction with the Susan G. Koeman Foundation, all players will wear a pink ribbon patch and pink wristbands. Also, several Pirates will use pink bats and wear pink shoes to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
  • Walker Replica Jersey: All kids ages 14 and younger, with paid admission, will receive a Neil Walker replica white home jersey, presented by Chevrolet.
  • And For Mom: All moms in attendance, with paid admission, will receive a Neil Walker replica pink accent white home jersey, presented by Chevrolet.

Baseball Card Program

The Pirates and Pirates Charities have partnered with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Officers to encourage positive youth behavior in the Pittsburgh community.  The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Officers will give local youth specially designed Pirates player baseball cards throughout the summer as a reward and incentive for positive actions and attitudes. There are six cards in the sets featuring Pirates Joel Hanrahan, Jeff Karstens, Andrew McCutchen, James McDonald, Jose Tabata and Neil Walker with inspirational sayings on the back.

 

Sports Luncheon

On Friday, June 8 the Pirates will host African American Heritage Day Sports Luncheon with keynote speaker Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the PNC Park Lexus Club. 65 Roses Club

The Pirates, along with broadcasters Greg Brown and Steve Blass, will host two 65 Roses Club nights at PNC Park this season on Thursday, June 21 and Friday, August 24. The events will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and take place before each game. The club is a group of Pirates fans who have joined together to raise funds to fight cystic fibrosis. By making a pledge to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for every home run the Pirates hit, these fans have the opportunity to meet Pirates players at private pre-game receptions. Miracle League Field

On Saturday, May 26 Pirates Charities and Casey’s Clubhouse will officially open Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills. This marks the fifth Miracle League field Pirates Charities has had the honor to be involved in and fourth in the Pittsburgh area.  The Miracle League of the South Hills is now accepting applications for special needs players (youth and adult leagues) and volunteers (buddies, umpires, announcers, coaches and more). Games will be held every Saturday from May 26 thru June 30. In addition, the league will return for a fall ball season. Where’s the Parrot?

  • The Avalon (Pa.) Apple Blossom Festival from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12.

Dynamic Pricing Section

New for 2012, the Pirates unveiled dynamic pricing system for the Bleacher General Admission section at PNC Park. Tickets for the 1,400 seat section, located in left field, will be placed on sale 10-days prior to each home game. The initial ticket price will then be adjusted- both lower and higher- in real time, based on demand.
