Miley named NL Rookie of the Month
After being thrust into the rotation because of Daniel Hudson's right shoulder injury, D-backs left-hander Wade Miley was named the National League Rookie of the Month for April on Wednesday.

"It's nice, but at the same time, we told him to keep the same hat size," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "It's a great accomplishment. He's off to a great start. I'd like to see him continue to throw the ball that way. He's been huge for our team, in more ways than just being on the mound. He's made some good plays, handles the bat well and he offers that personality. That's good. That's very good for us."

Miley took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Marlins on Sunday and has put together an impressive streak of strong performances despite being considered a long shot to make Arizona's roster out of Spring Training. This was Miley's first career monthly award.

"He's really nasty and has some good stuff. I'm glad I don't have to face him," D-backs teammate Jason Kubel said Sunday. "It's pretty fun to watch."

Miley led all NL rookie pitchers with a 3-0 record and a 1.29 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 21 innings. Miley started the season as Arizona's long reliever, but won both of his starts last month. He threw six scoreless innings against Philadelphia on April 23, then gave up one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings vs. Miami on Sunday. In two starts, he has 13 strikeouts to just three walks in 12 1/3 innings.

All of his earned runs in April came in one outing, a 1 2/3-inning relief stint against the Braves on April 19. In his 8 2/3 innings of relief work, Miley recorded a 3.12 ERA. He tossed four no-hit innings out of the bullpen against the Giants on April 8, the second-longest hitless outing by a reliever in D-backs history.

The 43rd overall pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, Miley owns a 7-2 record with a 3.39 ERA in 61 Major League innings, dating back to Aug. 20 of last season.
