D-backs Select Corbin From Mobile, Option Martinez To Reno

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they have selected left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin from Double-A Mobile, optioned right-handed pitcher Joe Martinez to Triple-A Reno and transferred infielder Geoff Blum from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Corbin, 22, will make his Major League debut as the fourth-youngest pitcher to make his first big league start in a D-backs’ uniform. He entered 2012 ranked as the D-backs’ No. 8 Prospect by MLB.com and No. 10 by Baseball America. In 4 starts for Mobile this season, he was 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA (5 ER in 27.0 IP), 8 walks and 25 strikeouts, holding lefties to a .211 average (4-for-19; all singles) and righties to a .240 mark (18-for-75). In his most recent outing on April 24 vs. Jacksonville, he earned his second victory tossing 7.0 scoreless innings with 3 hits allowed and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts. In 6 Spring Training appearances (3 starts), he went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA (7 ER in 21.0 IP) and .178 opponents average with 20 strikeouts, including a 0.57 ERA (1 ER in 15.2 IP) in his first 5 outings (2 starts).

Corbin went 9-8 with a 4.21 ERA in 26 starts last season for the BayBears en route to Southern League midseason All-Star honors. The D-backs acquired Corbin from the Los Angeles Angels on July 25, 2010 with LHP Joe Saunders, LHP Tyler Skaggs and RHP Rafael Rodriguez in exchange for RHP Dan Haren. The Angels’ second-round pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft attended Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Fla., approx. 460 mi. northwest of Marlins Park.

Martinez, 29, was recalled from Reno on April 24 and appeared in a game for the D-backs, working an inning of relief on April 25 vs. Phillies, allowing a run on 2 hits with a strikeout in the ninth inning. In 3 starts for Reno, he was 0-1 with a 4.42 ERA (9 ER in 18.1 IP), 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. On April 7 vs. Colorado Springs, he allowed 2 runs over 7.0 innings and on April 17 at Fresno, he allowed a run in 6.0 frames.

Over parts of 3 seasons in the Majors with the Giants (2009-10), Pirates (2010) and D-backs (2012), Martinez is 3-3 with a 6.93 ERA (39 ER in 50.2 IP) in 19 games (6 starts). Prior to this season, his most recent big league action was in 2010 as he made 4 appearances (1 start) with a 4.91 ERA (6 ER in 11.0 IP) for the Giants and 5 relief outings with a 3.12 ERA (3 ER in 8.2 IP) for the Pirates.

Blum, 38, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 18 (retro to April 17) with a strained left oblique. He was 1-for-11 (.091) in 8 games this season. Last season, he spent the majority of last season on the disabled list with right knee inflammation and a fractured right pinkie finger, appearing in 23 games and batting .224 (11-for-49) with 2 home runs and 20 RBI.

The D-backs 40-man roster is at 40.
