Decision near after MLB investigates Beras
The investigation into the identity of prospect Jairo Beras is complete and a decision could be imminent, according to an industry source.

Major League Baseball's Labor Department and the Department of Investigations have been reviewing Beras' documentation since the beginning of March to determine his age before the league will approve his $4.5 million agreement with the Rangers.

Beras, who is ranked No. 3 on MLB.com's list of the top 20 international prospects, was listed with a birthdate of Dec. 25, 1995, in February's MLB prospect showcase in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. That age makes him ineligible to sign until the international signing period begins on July 2. The Rangers say that Beras is 17, which suggests they believe the teenager is not subject to the new international signing guidelines.

In accordance with the new Basic Agreement, the international system will dictate that each team can spend up to $2.9 million for the 2012-13 signing period, and there are penalties for exceeding that number.

Last year, the Rangers set a record for the highest international amateur bonus when they paid Nomar Mazara $4.95 million, in addition to signing Ronald Guzman for $3.45 million.

Last week, Major League Baseball suspended prospect Jefferson Mejia for lying about his age. Pitching prospect Alberto Uceta also misrepresented his identity and is in the process of being suspended, according to a source.
