“Hanwha Solar is as passionate about bringing solar power to the U.S. as Bay Area fans are about the San Francisco Giants,” said Hee Cheul Kim, president of Hanwha Solar. “The Bay Area is home to many of our U.S. employees and operations, which is why we wanted to partner with the Giants to give back to the community, energizing and improving the lives of Giants fans and all Bay Area residents. We chose to make this partnership about more than baseball, and contribute to Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, because Hanwha Solar believes it is important to teach our youth about environmental responsibility.”
Hanwha Solar will install a PV system at AT&T Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants. The PV installation will generate enough clean energy to offset the power consumption of a sun-shaped, LED Hanwha Solar sign installed above left field which, among other features, will display the distance of each homerun hit by Giants players during games at AT&T Park.
Additionally, for every foot a Giants home-run ball travels during the 2012 season, Hanwha Solar will donate $1 worth of solar panels to Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s Columbia Park Clubhouse, located in the city’s Mission district. As a part of BGCSF’s overall Green Initiative, this donation will provide the Columbia Park Clubhouse with a source of clean energy and solar power education opportunities.
Hanwha Solar will also sponsor the Giants “Green Team,” which is a group of Giants employees who go into the stands at the end of the seventh inning to collect recyclables and remind fans to recycle at home. Currently the Giants lead the Major League Baseball in recycling efforts with more than 85 percent of the Park’s waste being diverted from landfills through an aggressive recycling and composting program, and hope to increase this number in 2012 through the “Green Team” efforts with Hanwha.
“The Giants are committed to promoting sustainability and clean energy in our community,” said Larry Baer, president and CEO of the San Francisco Giants. “Partnering with Hanwha Solar will allow us to continue to make a positive impact in keeping our community green and reminding our fans about the importance of respecting the environment.”
Hanwha Solar celebrated the start of the partnership with their employees, customers, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco and the Giants during Hanwha Solar Fireworks Night on April 14. The evening included a home plate ceremony before the game, Hanwha Solar giveaways and a fireworks show after the game.
